Museo della carta e filigrana di Fabriano Nella storia della carta Fabriano è un punto di riferimento che indica una peculiarità della civiltà europea. La Carta di fabriano è centro di antica tradizione manifatturiera che sente l'esigenza di recuperare la sua più autentica matrice culturale da secoli strettamente connessa all'arte cartaria. Fabriano è una delle prime città in Europa dove si è fabbricato carta bambagina: i più antiche documenti, dai quali si può dedurre la presenza di cartiere in questa città, risalgono infatti alla seconda metà del sec. XIII. La fama di Fabriano e della sua carta non è dovuta soltanto a ragioni cronologiche; ai cartai fabrianesi del XIII secolo si devono infatti alcune importanti innovazioni che migliorano profondamente il modo di fare la carta: fra queste la pila idraulica a magli multipli, che sostituì gli antiche mortai già impiegati dagli arabi per la preparazione della pasta da carta; la collatura con gelatina animale per conservare e rendere impermeabile il foglio. Un'altra invenzione assai importante fu la filigranature dei fogli che all'inizio consistette in segni di una certa ingenuità artistica, ma che in seguito si perfezionò fino a raggiungere l'espressione di un'arte vera e profondamente delicata.
